This thesis dealt with two problems: analyzing maxims that were flouted by characters in The Help movie and the reasons for characters flouting the maxims. The researcher chose 6 characters which influenced in building the story. Moreover, this study used qualitative content analysis. The data were collected by watching and reading the script of The Help movie several times. Afterward, the researcher classified the data and made coding to help the researcher in analyzing process. The last step was drawing conclusions.
The results of this study showed that they were 32 dialogues containing all types of maxim were flouted by characters. The reasons for flouting the maxims were competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive were also used. Conflictive reason became the highest rank among four reasons because it was often used to flout maxim of quality. The characters mostly used sarcasm as the way of characters for flouting maxim of quality to express their dislike about some topics such as getting marriage and downgrading job which cause conflicts among the characters.
