The purposes of the study were (1) To identify the kinds of maxims of cooperative principles that are violated in the movie entitled School of Rock (2) and To find out what are the possible causes of the maxim violation in the movie entitled School of Rock. The design of the study is qualitative design. The source of data were the dialogue transcript of School of Rock movie. The data collected by using flow model analysis by Miles and Huberman (1994) and adopted instrument from Mayring and the data were analyzed using QCAmap software. The process goes from data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. In analyzing the conversational maxims, the researcher used the theory of the Cooperative Principle by Paul Grice (1975). In this theory, the cooperative principles are divided into four parts: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. The result of the study showed that there are 49 utterances of maxim violation found in the movie entitled “School of Rock”. Maxim of quality is the dominating type of maxim that is being violated in the movie, with 34 utterances. The second is the maxim of manner with 7 utterances. The rarest of maxim violations that are violated by the main character in the movie are maxim of quantity and maxim of relation with 5 and 3 utterances. Furthermore There total of 37 utterances of possible causes of the maxim violation by the main character using the Christoffersen theory. possibly causes the maxim of violation are a tie between hide the truth and to building one’s believe with 11 utterances each, followed by to convince the hearer with 9 utterances, to satisfy the hearer with 4 utterances, to save face with 2 utterances, to cheer the hearer with 1 utterance and lastly tie between feel jealous about something and avoiding to hurt the hearer with 0 utterance each.
