Symbol is a sign that had literal meaning and intended meaning. In this sense, all words and things are symbols. Through symbols an author can communicate the larger idea with minimum words. There are two kinds of symbols. First, the conventional symbol and second is nonce symbol. The conventional symbol represent to things which can be seen and touched while nonce symbol represent to writer’s idea. The symbols have meaning that not all people know about that.The purpose of this study are: (1) to identify the types of symbol used in selected stories by James Joyce’s Dubliners and (2) to explore the intended meaning represented by the symbols in selected stories by James Joyce’s Dubliners.
