This study investigates the metaphorical expressions on C. J. Koch's The Year of Living Dangerously. It is an inductive qualitative content analysis using a coding system. This study examines how meaning is constructed with metaphor. It is a device for seeing something in terms of something else. The process underlying the use of metaphor is a way of constructing and interpreting the context of the text.

Metaphors consist of three components: the topic is subject of the metaphor, the vehicle is the term used metaphorically, and the ground is the relationship between the topic and the vehicle. The meaning of the metaphor is derived from the ground. Two general approaches, comparison and interaction theories, attempt to explain processes underlying formation of the ground. Comparison theories emphasize the linguistic relationship between topic and vehicle in which the topic's features are compared to the vehicle's features.
The ground is specific to a single topic vehicle combination. The findings are the interpretations of meaning derived from some utterances in the novel. The writer investigated using a qualitative research design, embracing the characteristics of content analysis.
The data were obtained from the content of the novel that contains metaphor and listing the utterances. Interpreting the metaphorical expressions could be could be understood from the angle of philosophy, politics, ideology, culture, theology, etc.
The result of data analysis showed that C .J .Koch‘s TYOLD is full with metaphors. For other researchers whose passion in literature may do more thorough and precise analysis on other literature work.
