The aims of this research are to investigate the types of code switching and functions of code switching of sixth semester students. The design of the study used descriptive qualitative. The research is conducted by qualitative approach because the result of the data analyzed is in descriptive phenomenon such as words, sentence and utterance. The subject was the lecturer of Department of English Education at Mulawarman University. The instrument used in this research is observation technique. Content Analysis was used by researcher in this research. Gao (1989: 6) states that content analysis is a set of procedures for collecting and organizing information in a standardized form at that allows analyzes to make inferences about the characteristics and meaning of written and other recorded material.
The result showed that the lecturer used code switching in teaching and learning activities. The findings showed that the lecturer used all three types by Poplack (2004) in teaching and learning activities. Those types of code switching :Extra-sentential switchng, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching. The most dominant used by lecturer was intra-sentential switching. Further more, the findings also showed the lecturer used the functions of code switching by Mattson and Burenhult (1999) in teaching and learning activities. There are topic switch, affective function, and repetition function. Repetitive function is the most dominant.
