This study is aimed to find out the level of pre-service English teachers’ speaking anxiety at the second, fourth and sixth semesters as well as to find out the level of speaking anxiety on pre-service English teachers through genders.
This study used a descriptive research design, particularly the survey study, and quantitative as the approach. The population of the second, fourth and sixth semesters were 274 of pre-service English teachers. The total females were 190 and males were 84. The questionnaire was used to collect data from the pre-service English teachers. The questionnaire was adopted from Horwitz (1986) consisted of 30 statements. After the data had been collected, the data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage and mean.
The findings of the study revealed that pre-service English teachers from second, fourth and sixth semesters had moderate level of speaking anxiety. It could be seen from the mean score result that showed 3.13, 2.98, and 2.89 respectively. From these result, it could seen that the longer of study length the lower of students’ anxiety level. However within gender based context, male students tend to have lower language anxiety than female students. This is caused by certain factors such as female students were more being panic when they have to speak English without preperation, nervous when the English teacher ask question spontaneously, afraid that the other students will laughed at while speaking English, worries about consequences of failing and self-unconfidence such as feel that the other students speak English better than themselves.
