Vernacular are the first language learned by people in multilingual communities, it also used for communication in the home and with close friend and also the language of solidarity between people from the same ethnic group. Problem in this study (1) What are the sentence pattern of Afro American Vernacular English which used in The Color Purple movie ? (2) What language variation that are used by Afro American characters in The Color Purple movie ? There are seven types patterns of Standard English such as : SV, SVO, SVC, SVA, SVOO, SVOC, SVOA. For language variation classified based on social class, age, gender, and style. The design of this study was qualitative research and document analysis was used for this research since the data were in form of written text. To determine the dialogue researcher used purposive sampling. From the study, there are several data that found by researcher and the most pattern that occured in The Color Purple movie is SVC as much as 41 times. The researcher also found some different pattern such as C, S, SVSC, SC, SA, VO, ASV, VASC, OSVO, OSVOVO, VSC, VC, VSCA, and VSA. From analysis, it is revealed the language variation which used of Afro American characters in The Color Purple movie mostly based on sex/gender. In the end of the research, the researcher suggest to students of EnglishDepartment to analyze about AAVE in other aspect such as phonology, morphology and semantics. The researcher also suggest to find out about AAVE in other media like songs, novel or short story.
