Speech Disorder in Christy Brown’s Utterances in My Left Foot Movie
Cerebral palsy is a disease where an affected person cannot move their muscles, such as around the mouth that makes them often have difficulty controlling the movement enough to produce speech that is clear and understood by others, that is why an affected will has speech disorder. Speech disorder is a condition when someone has problem in making some sounds. As a reflection of real life, movies can also contain the phenomenon of speech disorder such as in My Left Foot movie.
This research is aimed to know about kinds of speech disorders that are found inutterances of the character named Christy Brown in My Left Foot movie. Theresearcher used speech disorder theory by Lanier to find kinds of speech disorderin the main character. This research was conducted by using descriptive methodand qualitative approach. Data were taken from movie script in the form ofutterances. The result of this research showed that in Christy Brown’s utterances had some kinds of speech disorder, namely articulation disorder (substitutions,omissions, and distortions), and fluency disorder (stuttering). The result also showed that articulation disorder (substitutions) is mostly found in Christy brown’s utterances.
