The Portrayal of Discrimination towards Female Characters in The Hidden Figures Movie
The Hidden Figures is a movie directed by Theodore Melfi and released in 2016. The movie tells about the story of three African-American women who were discriminated by the society in 1960s. This research discussed the issues of discrimination occurred toward the black female characters in The Hidden Figures movie. It aimed to describe the types of discrimination and to explain the impacts toward the black female characters. This research focused on analyzing the types of discrimination and its impacts toward the black female characters whichconsists of Katherine Goble, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson.
In conducting this research, the researcher used the theory of types of discrimination by Peter I. Rose and the theory of the impacts of discrimination.The researcher used the qualitative research as the method and the feminist literary criticism as the approach of this research. The findings of this researchshowed that there are two types of discrimination portrayed in the movie; those are derogation and denial. The findings also showed that the impacts of discrimination toward black female characters emerged in psychological and economic fields.
