Novel, like other types of books, is used as a medium of education since it contains great figures with diverse events that come within an interesting plot. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is one of them that convey the themes such as, love, power, sacrifices, loyalty, choices, and friendship. This novel also conveys the moral values that are derived from those themes.
This research attempts to find out and analyze the themes and moral values in this novel, also the correlation between theme and moral value. The source of the data is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows written by J.K.Rowling. The researcher did several steps of extracting the data commencing from reading the whole book carefully, categorizing the various the themes by highlighting phrases which are considered as themes, to making table based on the specifications of themes, and then find out the moral value based on the themes.
This research used theoretical triangulation which means that this research uses more than one theory to analyze the data. The theories used in this research are the theory by Braun and Clarke (2006) which focused on thematic analysis and the theory by Ryan (1997) which used words repetition.
The findings reveal that there are several themes which are divided into major and minor themes and moral value presented by the author of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The major themes of the novel are love is powerful, the abuse of power. While the minor themes of the novel are the nobility of sacrifices, the unwavering loyalty, the importance of choices, and the unconditional friendship. The moral values that are conducted base on the themes in the novel are it is not power that saves us but love; in order to achieve something, sacrifice must be done; it is our choice that shows our value; and having someone’s unwavering loyalty and unconditional friendship is a valuable possession. There is also a close correlation between theme and moral value, thus, they are complimentary for each other in building a well developed story.
