Flouting and violating towards maxim of quality are the part of breaking maxim that occurs when the interlocutors fail in observing the maxim of quality. Flouting and violating towards maxim of quality are used by giving untrue statement at the level of literal meaning and giving wrong information to a hearer. This failure is used by the interlocutors because they have conversation purposes that they want to achieve, to
show or just to hide things from hearer. Apparently, the flouting and violating towards maxim of quality do not only happen in daily conversation but these also happen in the literary work such as novel written by Jodi Picoult, entitled My Sister’s Keeper. This novel tells about a girl named Anna who lives as a donor for helping her sister from cancer. The novel shows the conflict and dilemma among the characters, which triggers the use of flouting and violating towards maxim of quality in their utterances. Each utterance has different meaning and purpose in different situation. The aims of this research were to find the flouting and violating expressions towards maxim of quality in My Sister’s Keeper novel and to find the purpose of using flouting and violating towards maxim of quality in major characters‟ utterances. This research used descriptive qualitative method because the data were found in utterances produced by major characters in My Sister’s Keeper novel and narratively explained. The step of data collection were reading the novel and understanding each conversation in the novel, then identifying the utterances that contained the elements of flouting and violating towards maxim of quality. Finally the data were arranged in accordance with the
research questions. Meanwhile, in analyzing the data, the researcher provided the analysis in three phases: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The data of this research were taken from the conversations of major characters. The flouting and violating towards maxim of quality were found in My Sister’s Keeper novel. Each strategy of flouting and violating towards maxim of quality were also found in this
novel. Flouting with metaphor strategy was most frequently used by the characters because it can represent and emphasize the point of talk to express their opinion. Meanwhile, the purposes of using flouting and violating towards maxim of quality were to convince someone, express feeling and condition, to insult someone, to tease someone, to keeps someone‟s feeling, to keep secret, and to avoid embarrassment.
