THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION AND ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SECOND GRADE OF ISLAMIC INTEGRATED JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SUBULUSSALAM SAMARINDA

The purposes of this study were to know students’ motivation in learning English, to know the students’ English achievement and the relationship between students’ motivation and English achievement. The design of this study was Quantitative research with correlational as the design. In this study 32 students were selected from the second grade of Islamic integrated junior high school Subulussalam Samarinda as the sample of this research who were chosen randomly. The researcher used English motivation questionnaire which consisting 22 items and a test which consisting 25 items for students’ English achievement as the instruments to collect data. Five poin likert scale for the questionaire and multiple choice for English test were used by the researcher as data collection techniques. The students’ motivation was analyzed by using three levels of
motivation which categorized as low, medium and high. The students’ English achievement was analyzed by using English test which counted according to five category (excellent, good, moderate, poor, very poor
). To analyze the correlation between students’ motivation and their English achievement, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula since the research tried to find correlation between two variables which one of the variables has interval data. The data were counted using SPSS version 20. The research findings have found that: (1) the average of students’ motivation score in learning English was moderate
(79.56 ); (2) the average of students’ English achievement score was low (56.87); (3) there was significant relationship between students’ motivation and English achievement of the second grade of Islamic Integrated Junior High School Subulussalam Samarinda since the researcher found the value of significant level (0.021) was lower than (≥)0.05. Accordingly, the hypothesis which could be accepted was alternative hypothesis
(Ha ). In conclusion, the students were moderately motivated to achieve achievement in learning English. Students’ English achievement required coordination and interaction between different aspects of motivation.
