A STUDY OF CODE SWITCHING ON “GOGIRL” MAGAZINE
Code switching is a strategy of using two or more languages in the same utterance. It is a
common phenomenon for bilinguals or even multilinguals. Gogirl magazine is one of the best
women’s magazine in Indonesia which is used as the research object about code switching in
this study. The purpose of this study is to find out the types and functions of code switching on
Gogirl magazine. In analyzing the types and functions of code switching on Gogirl magazine,
the researcher use qualitative method.
Based on the result of this research, it is found that there are two types of code switching in
Gogirl magazine according to Holmes (2001), such as tag code switching, inter sentential code
switching and intra sentential switching. It was clear that intra sentential switching was more
dominant types found in Gogirl magazine. In addition, the researcher also finds that the
functions of code switching on Gogirl magazine according to Gumperz (1982) are to quote
somebody else, express feeling function, and cover inability in speaking a certain language
functions.
The result shows that English is the language which is most frequently used. Quoting
somebody else function is more dominant based on the readers’ perception because the readers
often quote some English words from the texts in Gogirl magazine.
