Teaching writing is difficult and complex but nowadays teachers can take the advanced of the technology which is using silent short movie as a medium to make the students feel enjoy in learning writing and make the students build the good writing that is really conceptual and judgment.
The aim of this research was to find out the whether using a silent short movie as the mean in writing narrative text has significant effect in the writing achievement of tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 6 Samarinda.
Related to the purpose of the study, the researcher used experimental research design. The population was 420 tenth grade students in SMK Negeri 6 Samarinda and only 60 students from class X-TP and class X-KA that were taken as the sample and divided into two groups, experimental group and control group. The data of this study were collected from writing assignment scores in pre-test and post-test and analyzed by using independent samples t-test.
The result of the pre-test showed that the samples began with the same writing achievement. It was proved by seeing the slight difference in the pre-test mean score which was 7,52 for experimental group and 7,57 for control group. The significant effect was seen in the post-test result. The experimental group obtained higher score (8,01) than control group (7,85). The p value for independent sample t-test in post-test was bigger than the level of significant. It meant there was a significant effect in using silent short movie in students’ achievement in writing.
Therefore, it is suggested to use the silent short movie in teaching narrative and to conduct the future research that can analyze the effect of this media in other kind of text types, or other kind of English skills.
