The purpose of this study were to know the teacher’s strategies in teaching english vocabulary and the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching english vocabulary. The research subject of this study was an English teacher. The study was conducted at SD Islamic Center Samarinda were located on Meranti street.
Vocabulary is the basic element in the language. Vocabulary is one of the important parts in learning English, especially for the beginners. In learning new words in foreign language, as thing that should be considered is that are still buildings up their first language vocabulary are still in process of acquiring and organizing concepts. The children relate the L2 with their L1 knowledge to develop and understand the meaning ofa word.
The design of this study was qualitative descriptive in which it is aimed to seek the teacher’s strategies in teaching English vocabulary to the students and the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary to students. The researcher used observation and interview to collect data and used observation sheet and interview guide as the researcher instruments. For data analysis technique for observation and transcribe the record, code analysis the data for interview.
Teaching vocabulary to students at school needed more than one methods and strategies considering their needed. There were some strategies suggested by experts for teaching vocabulary to students (game, TPR method, song, demonstration, visual scaffolding, drilling, and Questioning for comprehension checking) were adopted by the teacher at school, even though she did not realize using it. Teaching vocabulary using the target language, without any translation into the native one, might make the subject delivered successfully, unlike what some experts worried about. This issue had been proved by the teacher at school who used English in teaching vocabulary to the students, teaching difficulties might emerge from the teacher herself and the students. These difficulties were problems classroom management, teacher’s limited English proficiency, students’ learning style, and students’ characteristics.
Meanwhile, teacher are recommended to choose the appropriate strategies based on subjects goal and teacher has to employ various media as creative as possible for the implementation of teaching english vocabulary.
