Many lecturers used code mixing and code switching in seminar Examination. In line with that, the researcher thinks that it is very interesting to analyze the code switching and code mixing used by lecturers at Mulawarman University. Hence, in this study the writer tries to find out (1) the types of code switching and code mixing used by lecturers in seminar examination, and (2) factors influencing of the use of code switching and code mixing by lecturers.
This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data collected by observing the class where the lecturers were examining student’s seminar examination. The researcher recorded the conversation from the beginning until the end of the class. After getting the data, the researcher transcribed the data into written data. Then, the data were classified based on the types of code switching and code mixing and analyzed the reasons why the code switching and code mixing were used.
The findings of the analysis are as follows; first, there were only four types code mixing used by the lecturers in seminar examination, they were: the insertion of phrase (1); the insertion of word (18); the insertion of hybrid (20); and the insertion of clause (5). Meanwhile there were only three types of code switching; they were: tag-switching (3); inter-sentential switching (10), and; intra-sentential switching (9). Second, there were ten influencing factors used in analyzing why the lecturers switched and mixed their language while giving evaluation in seminar examination,
but only seven reasons were found in this study. Those factors were: talking about particular topic (28); quoting somebody else (1); repetition used for clarification (6); intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor (9); real lexical need (7); to soften or strengthen request or command (3), and; interjection (1).
