THE EFFECT OF PICTURE SERIES MEDIA TOWARDS STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT IN NARRATIVE TEXT AT EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 20 SAMARINDA

Ida Wardani, M.Pd The aims of this study were to find out there is any significant difference on reading achievement in narrative text between pre tests of experimental and controlled groups, 2) there is any significant difference between pre and post tests of experimental group, 3) there is any significant difference between post tests of experimental and controlled groups. The quasi experimental design was used in this study. The population was all the eighth grade students in SMPN 20 Samarinda in academic years 2018/2019 which consisted of 7 (seven) classes with the total number 250 students. The sample was two classes of eighth grade students namely class 8G as the experimental group and class 8E as the controlled group. 30 students in experimental group used picture series media while teaching and learning reading narrative text in class and 30 students in controlled group learned reading narrative text without picture series media. Data collecting technique was conducted pre-test and post-test by giving test which consists 30 multiple choice items for each test.
Data analyzed used t-test by using SPSS version 20. The researcher used t-test in order to find out the significant difference on reading achievement in experimental group before and after they were taught by using picture series media. The result of the study showed that in experimental group, the mean score in pre test was 73 and it increased to 85 in post-test. It also showed that Sig-value was lower than Sig-level (0.000 < 0.05). Another t-test was used in order to see the significant difference between students in experimental and controlled groups after 8 meetings. The posttest mean score in experimental group was 85 and in controlled group was 76. It also showed that Sig-value was lower than Sig-level (0.000 < 0.05). Thus, based on the results of these two t-tests it can be concluded that the H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. By looking at the analysis and interpretation of the research findings, the researcher concluded that the difference improvement on reading achievement in narrative text of experimental and controlled group taught with and without picture series media seemed to be significant.
