This research intended to analyze types of illocutionary acts and context that underlies the illocutionary acts performed by Bertie‟s utterances in “The King‟s Speech” movie by David Seidler. Illocutionary act is called by the act of doing something. People might utter to make statement, offer, and explanation, or for some other communicative purpose. The movie talk about how the main character, Bertie fights against his stammer, showed some illocutionary acts in his utterances. The researcher formulated two research questions, (1) what are the types of illocutionary act found in Bertie‟s utterances in “The King‟s Speech” movie by David Seidler?, (2) what context that underlies the illocutionary act performed by Bertie‟s utterance. Due to the fact that the data source of this research was a movie “The King‟s Speech” by David Seidler, the data in this study is Bertie‟s utterances as the main character, the research approach of this study is pragmatic especially speech act. The research design of this study is qualitative approach that relied on the natural data from the conversation and the researcher as the key instrument. Natural data means the data is originally taken from the source of data directly. The written text is analyzed using content analysis. The text which was analyzed is transcript of The King‟s Speech Movie.
However, the focus of this study was find the illocutionary acts. The content analysis technique gave the relation between the text being observed and the context where they were applied. Triangulation used in the scene that conclusion was not convincing or inaccurate. The researcher applied a type of triangulation namely theoretical triangulation. The researcher chose theoretical triangulation since researcher held the study with several theories in speech acts namely illocutionary acts. This research resulted in two conclusions. First, illocutionary act types are found in “The King‟s Speech” movie by David Seidler. There are four out of five types illocutionary act found that consist of 30 Representatives, 17 Directives, 13 Commisives, and 11 Expressives. The researcher could not find Declarative types of illocutionary act because there was no utterance that change the world, the roles or status of the characters in the movie. Second, context that underlies the illocutionary acts occurred is context of situation (where, when, and to whom the utterances performed). The illocutionary acts occurred most often when Bertie‟s did therapy with Lionel Louge, the therapist.
