THE EFFECT OF THINK PAIR SHARE TECHNIQUE ON CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK FARMASI SAMARINDA IN ACADEMIC YEARS 2018/2019

The purposes of the study were: (1) to know how students’ critical thinking skills of experimental and control groups before treatment are. (2) to know the significant difference in students’ critical thinking skills of experimental group between pre-test and post-test after treatment. (3) to know the significant difference in students’ critical thinking skills between experimental and control groups after treatment. The design of this study was quasi-experimental which used two groups of subjects, experimental and control groups. The experimental group taught by using Think-Pair-Share technique and the control one used usual technique during the process of teaching English language. The population of this study was 126 students from the first grade students in SMK Farmasi Samarinda. Two classes were taken as the sample by using purposive sampling, with the number of sample was 30 students for each experimental and control groups. The instrument of the study was Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level X for collecting the data. In analyzing data, t-test was used to compare the mean score of the experimental and control groups and to test hypotheses. This study showed three findings. Firstly, it was found that the mean score of pretest in experimental group was 13.80 and for control group was 15.60 which meant that the students’ critical thinking skill of experimental and control groups were not significantly different. Secondly, after being given treatment, it was found that the significant value is 0.000 < a= 0.05, it meant there was significant difference of pretest and posttest mean score of experimental group. Thirdly, it was found that the significant value is 0.026 < a= 0.05 which meant there was significant difference of posttest mean score between experimental and control groups. It meant that H0 was rejected and H a was accepted.
In conclusion, there was significant effect of using Think-Pair-Share technique toward students’ critical thinking.
