THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SELF-CONCEPT AND READING COMPREHENSION OF THE FIFTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018

Self-concept is what one understands about his/her self. It may include one‘s social character or abilities. Each person can change his/her self-concept to be more positively to get a good achievement but it depends on what one sees and understand on his/her feelings, belief, and attitude. Better one‘s self-concept, itwill be higher self-competence can be developed. Therefore, there are three research questions, they were : (1) How is the Self-Concept of the Fifth Semester
Students of English Department at Mulawarman University in Academic year 2017/2018. (2) How is the students‘ Reading Comprehension of The Fifth Semester Students of English Department at Mulawarman University in Academic Year 2017/2018. (3) Is there any significant correlation between SelfConcept and Reading Comprehension of the FifthSemester Students of English Department at Mulawarman University in Academic Year 2017/2018.
The purposes of this study was to find out the correlation between SelfConcept and Reading
Comprehension of the Fifth Semester Students of English Department at Mulawarman University in Academic Year 2017/2018 and to find out whether there was any significant correlation between these two variables. This study used correlation design. The populations of this study was The Fifth Semester Students of English Department with the total of 145 students and 30 students were taken as the sample by using purposive sampling. The instruments used were Self-Concept questionnaire and Reading Comprehension test. The Questionnaire consisted of 20 items and Reading Comprehension Test consisted of 25 items. The data were analyzed by using Pearson‘ Product Moment Formula.
The result of this study showed that the students had high Self-Concept and good in Reading Comprehension. The mean score of the students‘ selfconcept was 78 and the mean score of Reading Comprehension was 68. Then, at the 5% level of significant. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was significant correlation between Self-Concept and Reading Comprehension of The Fifth Semester Students of English Department at Mulawarman University in Academic Year 2017/2018.
