THE EFFECT OF USING GAMES ON VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS OF SDN 006 BALIKPAPAN TENGAH

Vocabulary is one of important and fundamental elements in learning foreign language in this case English. Therefore, learning vocabulary should be fun and interesting for elementary students. Game is one of activities that can be associated in learning teaching process.
This study was conducted to know whether using games in learning vocabulary gives effect on vocabulary achievement of the fourth year students at SDN 006 Balikpapan Tengah.
The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The population was the 4th year students of SDN 006 Balikpapan Tengah. In selecting the sample the writer used stratified sampling to have each group equally represented. The students of class 4A and 4B of SDN 006 Balikpapan Tengah were chosen as the sample. The data collection was done by collecting the result of vocabulary test. T-test was used to analysis the difference between the students’ learning achievement by using games and without using games.
Based on the analysis, the writer found that the post-test mean of experimental group is 69.83 and mean of control group is 61.00. By using t-test at the level of significance () 0.05, is got tcount is bigger than ttable, that is tcount = 2.046 > ttable = 1.701, it showed that there was a significant difference on vocabulary achievement between experimental group and control group. From the mean score and the result of t-test formula of independent group, it can be concluded that the experimental group (the treatment using game) has better ability in vocabulary achievement than control group. It means that “using games in learning vocabulary has a significant effect on the students’ vocabulary achievement”,
