THE EFFECT OF USING JIGSAW TECHNIQUE ON READING COMPREHENSION OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 021SAMARINDA

There are many techniques that can be used by the teacher in teaching English, and it can be used to make the class more interesting and fun, becauseactually the students get bored easily, especially in learning reading.Jigsaw is one of technique that can help the teachers in teaching reading to improve students ‟reading comprehension.

The purpose of this study was to know whether there was an effect of using Jigsaw technique on reading comprehension to the first grade students of SMPN 021 Samarinda.The research design of this study was pre-experimental design using quantitative approach. The population of this study was the first grade students of SMPN 021 Samarinda and 37 students taken as sample. The number of research instrument was 40 items.

The result of this study showed that the jigsaw technique increased reading comprehension of the first grade students of SMPN 021 Samarinda. This wasindicated by the mean score of post-test (82.70) the qualification is A and the classification is Excellent which is higher than the mean score of pre-test (68.32) the qualification is B and the classification is Good. This means that the students who have been taught by using jigsaw had better result than the students who have been taught without using jigsaw. Then the researcher went to t-table to see the value of df = 36, at level of significant 5% the value for df 36 = 2.02. From the computation done in this study, the value of computed was 9.67 > 2.02, it means that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This indicated that jigsaw method has significant effect on the students ‟reading comprehension of the first grade students of SMPN 021 Samarinda.

From the result of this study, it is suggested for the teacher to use this teaching techniquebecause it is one of the technique to increase reading comprehension of the students.
