Freedom Writers is an inspiring drama about an idealistic teacher, Erin Gruwell who broke
down the walls separating her students with each other. This movie showed racial conflict
among the races, Latino, Cambodian, Black, and White. It made characters in the movie form
groups or communities based on the races. There were some specific languages used by these
communities. These languages known as register. The aims of this research were to identify the
types of register used in Freedom Writers movie and also to identify the factor that influenced
the use of register in Freedom Writers movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive
qualitative method, because the data of this research were in the written form of the script of
Freedom Writers movie by Richard LaGravenese. The steps of data collection were watching
the movie several times, reading and understanding the script of Freedom Writers movie. Then,
the researcher selected the data related to the problems of the research. Last, the data were
arranged systematically in accordance to research questions. In analyzing the data, the
researcher presented the data, interpreted the data and drew conclusion. The data of this research
were taken from 39 data in the conversation form. There were 39 vocabulary categorized as
registers in Freedom Writers movie. The vocabulary were classified into types of register; 1
frozen register (baptism), 25 formal register (poetry, phrase, rhyme, PTA, parents‟ night, etc), 9
consultative register (ma, my crazy English teacher, strongest students, etc), 2 casual register
(hyphenates, project), 2 intimate register (honey, my schoolteacher). The factors influencing the
use of register included in field, mode, and tenor factor.
